Protein Name:
3-oxoacyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] synthase, mitochondrial
|
UniprotKB/SwissProt ID: Q8L3X9 (Q8L3X9)
Gene Name:
KAS
Organism: Arabidopsis thaliana (Mouse-ear cress)
Function: Catalyzes all the condensation reaction of fatty acid synthesis by the addition to an acyl acceptor of two carbons from malonyl-ACP (PubMed:17616510, PubMed:28202596). Able to elongate saturated acyl chains from 4 to at least 16 carbons (PubMed:17616510, PubMed:28202596). Uses malonyl-CoA but not acetyl-CoA as primer substrate (PubMed:17616510). When expressed in a heterologous system, reveals a bimodal distribution of products, with peaks at C8 and C14-C16 (PubMed:17616510). The major product of the reaction (octanoyl-ACP) is required for the lipoylation of essential mitochondrial proteins (PubMed:17616510, PubMed:28202596). Required for mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis (mtFAS) (PubMed:28202596). MtFAS are essential for photorespiration and plant development, probably by influencing mitochondrial membrane lipid composition and other lipid metabolic pathways (PubMed:28202596)
