UniprotKB/SwissProt ID: Q02748 (Q02748)
Gene Name:
eIF4A
Organism: Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit fly)
Function: ATP-dependent RNA helicase which is a subunit of the eIF4F complex involved in cap recognition and is required for mRNA binding to ribosome. In the current model of translation initiation, eIF4A unwinds RNA secondary structures in the 5'-UTR of mRNAs which is necessary to allow efficient binding of the small ribosomal subunit, and subsequent scanning for the initiator codon. As a result, promotes cell proliferation and growth (By similarity). Binds and antagonises the bam-bgcn complex; probably prevents bam mediated translational repression of shg/E-cadherin (PubMed:19556547). Involved in germ cell formation (PubMed:18590813). Involved in germline stem cell maintenance and proliferation; prevents differentiation (PubMed:19556547)
