Protein Name: Heterochromatin protein 1

UniprotKB/SwissProt ID: P05205 (P05205)

Gene Name: Su(var)205

Organism: Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit fly)

Function: Structural component of heterochromatin, involved in gene repression and the modification of position-effect-variegation (PubMed:26389589). Recognizes and binds histone H3 tails methylated at 'Lys-9', leading to epigenetic repression (PubMed:11859155, PubMed:26389589). Stabilizes chromatin-associated RNAs probably by binding to them and thereby preventing their degradation (PubMed:26389589). Associates with, and may be a part of, the HipHop-HOAP complex that recruits the MTV complex to form the terminin telomere-capping complex, which binds to chromosome ends in a sequence-independent manner and prevents telomere fusion (PubMed:12510197, PubMed:20057353). Telomere capping is independent of the origin recognition complex (ORC) (PubMed:12510197)
